Perched above the Pacific on Maui’s northwest coast, Kapalua’s Plantation Course is one of the world’s great resort courses and a fixture on professional golf’s global stage. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it’s best known as the longtime host of the PGA Tour’s season opener, The Sentry—an event traditionally reserved for winners from the previous year.
Landing this assignment in 2015 felt like a meaningful step up in my career as a golf course photographer. I returned in 2019, just before the course reopened following a thoughtful Coore & Crenshaw renovation. With sweeping elevation changes, ocean views from nearly every hole, and Maui as its backdrop, Kapalua is as dramatic—and rewarding to photograph—as tournament golf gets.
